HOCHIMINH CITY – CU CHI TUNNELS – CITY TOUR
After breakfast at hotel, drive to Cu Chi tunnels, the incredible underground tunnel network constructed by Vietnamese fighters during the long struggle for independence. One of the highlights of your Vietnamese holiday is bound to be your visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels, an amazing complex of underground bunkers about 40 kms northwest of Ho Chi Minh City and near the Cambodian Border. The tunnel system was commenced in the 1940’s. During the US War, at one time the tunnels spread out for 350kms and were up to 7 metres deep. They served as shelter, storage facilities and a secret means of communication for the guerrilla army. An ingenious system of concealed entrances kept the occupants safe despite air attacks and many efforts to penetrate the tunnel complex. Lunch is at Indian restaurant. Afternoon, we continue to visit to Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, Saigon Post Office, Jade Emperor Pagoda. End of the day free time for shopping at Ben Thanh Market, whose clock tower over the main entrance to what was formerly known as Les Halles Centrale is the symbol of Saigon. Opened first in 1914, it features one-way aisles loaded with people clamoring to sell you cheap goods (T-shirts, aluminum wares, silk, bamboo, and lacquer) and postcards.
